HUMBLE, Texas â€" Although rain shortened the first day of play, the University of Houston Men's Golf program held the first-day lead of the All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola on Friday evening at Golf Club of Houston.
Through 15 holes, the Cougars had posted a score of -9 to stand five strokes ahead of No. 13 Baylor, which competed its First Round with a score of 4-under 284.
Individually, four Cougars stood among the top-12 individual leaders with junior Michael Perras and sophomore Matt Williams tied for third at -3. Junior Papito Gonzalez was tied for seventh at -2 with senior Matt Scobie in a tie for 12th at -1.
Play was suspended due to rain around 1:15 p.m., and players did not return to the course until 3:45 p.m. Teams competed until 6:15 p.m., when play was halted for the day due to darkness.
By the time, the First Round was halted, six teams had completed their first rounds with the remaining 12 teams playing on their back nines.
Starting on No. 1, both Perras and Williams drained four birdies with only one bogey through their first holes. Perras enjoyed his first birdie on the par-4 fifth hole before suffering his lone bogey on No. 8.
However, the Deer Park, Texas, native rallied on the back nine with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11-12 and added another on the par-5, 580-yard, 15th hole
Williams enjoyed his most success on the front nine. The Calgary, Alberta, native started his spring season with a birdie on his first hole and added additional birdies on No. 4 and No. 8. Despite a bogey on No. 10, Williams rallied with a birdie of his own on the 15th hole before play was stopped.
Williams and Perras stood one stroke behind Baylor's Cooper Dossey, who finished the First Round with a 68, and UTSA's Bryce Alley, who was at -4 through 15 holes.
Gonzalez overcame a slow start on the front nine with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 5-6. However, he opened his back nine with a birdie on the 350-yard, par-4 10th hole and sank consecutive birdies on Nos. 16-17 to finish his day at 2-under 70.
Scobie rallied from a double bogey on No. 6 to post four birdies through 15 holes and was tied for 12th at -1.
Senior Emmett Oh was tied for 33rd with a 73. Playing as individuals, redshirt freshman George Gardner was tied for 63rd with a 75, while redshirt freshman Zach Tracy was tied for 75th with a 77.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
Teams who did not finish their First Rounds will resume play at 7:30 a.m., with plans for the Second Round to start around 9:30 a.m.

ALL-AMERICAN INTERCOLLEGIATE PRESENTED by COCA-COLA HISTORY
For years, the All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola ranked as one of the nation's premier collegiate tournaments, featuring some of the country's top student-athletes and teams.
The tournament was played every season from 1955 to 1990. After a one-year break in 1992, the tournament picked up and was played again from 1992 to 1997. The All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola resumed in 2006 and was played each season through the 2008-09 campaign.
This marks the second straight season in which the Cougars have hosted this tournament. A year ago, Arkansas captured the team title with a score of 9-under 855 with Razorback Taylor Moore earning medalist honors at 9-under 207.
The Cougars lead the way in their tournament with 23 team titles and 20 individual championships during its history
UP NEXT
Following the All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola, the Cougars play host to another tournament when they participate at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Feb. 26-28 at Querencia Golf Club in San Jose, Cabo, Mexico.
From there, Houston will host the Border Olympics on March 10-11 at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
